Dear Members,
We were fortunate to have Deputy Inspector Conforti from the 109 Precinct at our General Membership meeting last night. Please read the following update and tips from DI Conforti:
- There have been three purse thefts in playground area at Bowne Park. If you take a child to the park, please do not leave your purse unattended.
- There have been a few burglaries in the area. If you leave the house, lock your windows and doors. Do not leave valuables in your car and lock your cars.
- Telephone Scams:
Saying you are going to be arrested for owing the IRS money if you do not pay now. Don’t give out any information or send money. - Calls saying a relative (grandson) has been arrested in another state or foreign country (Dominican Republic, Las Vegas) and you must send money now.
- Call saying you have won a billion, or million dollar lottery (or any game) and must send money so they can free up the funds and send it to you.
- A person claiming to be with Microsoft saying your computer has been hacked and you must give detailed personal info about your computer.
- Con-Ed scan saying they have not received your payment and asking for your credit card info to pay the bill.
- Calls around the holidays soliciting money for the Internal Police Organization (not quite sure of the name Inspector Conforti mentioned) for the families of officers killed in the line of duty. The Police Department does not solicit funds for the families. They are taken care of by private entities. Be aware of all phone solicitations for other charities.
Best Regards,
Bob Hanophy, Jr.
President
