Borough President Melinda Katz Commends Community Group
The Broadway Flushing Homeowners Association held a general membership meeting on February 26 at The Church on the Hill in Flushing. The Association’s 28th President, Robert J. Hanophy, Jr. welcomed and introduced Queens County Borough President Melinda Katz who addressed the group and led a lively discussion on many topics affecting the County’s residents and Broadway-Flushing in particular.
Topics included the County budget, overdevelopment, illegal basement apartments, and the state of the NYC Department of Buildings. Additionally, BP Katz addressed an issue of major concern to the residents of Northeast Queens: Airplane Noise. She was joined in the discussion by City Council Member Paul Vallone, Greg Levine who represented Congresswoman Grace Meng and Janet McEneaney from Queens Quiet Skies. Attendees spoke of the ever increasing noise and pollution from our local airports created by the FAA’s NextGen technology.
BP Katz presented a Proclamation commending the organization for half a century of very effective volunteer work. She stated “The Association has fulfilled and exceeded its mission, conserving the beautiful residential area, serving as a bridge between individuals and government, and promoting the cultural and civic life of the area.” She also praised the group’s accomplishment of having the community placed on the New York State and National Historic District Registers. As a salute to the officers and members, she proclaimed February 26, 2015 as “Broadway-Flushing Homeowners Association Day” in Queens.
At the opening of the meeting, Katz spoke proudly of her lifelong connection to Queens and the borough’s designation as the “Number One Tourist Destination in the USA” by the publication Lonely Planet. She was very pleased to exclaim that the bridges leading to Queens now say: “The World’s Borough”.
